The Swedish Government has approved Skyborn Renewables' 2.8 GW Fyrskeppet Offshore Wind Farm, making it the only offshore wind project currently approved on Sweden's east coast. Located in the southern Bothnian Sea off the coast of Uppsala, the project is expected to generate around 5 TWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to supply approximately one million households.
The decision marks a significant milestone for Sweden's energy transition but also highlights the increasingly complex balance between energy security and national security. While Fyrskeppet received government approval, eleven other offshore wind projects were rejected, primarily due to concerns raised by Sweden's Armed Forces regarding their potential impact on national defence and military operations.
Among the projects affected are Ørsted's Skåne Offshore Wind Park and Gävle Offshore Wind Park. Following the decision, Ørsted expressed disappointment, noting that the projects could have made a substantial contribution to Sweden's future electricity supply and energy security, while confirming it is assessing the implications for its Swedish offshore wind portfolio.
Beyond its contribution to renewable power generation, the Fyrskeppet project will require extensive marine geophysical, geotechnical and environmental investigations throughout the planning and development phases, underlining the critical role of subsurface data and site characterisation in the successful delivery of offshore wind infrastructure.
