Fugro has completed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) geohazard survey for PETRONAS Carigali at the Megah and Limbayong fields offshore Sabah, East Malaysia.
The company deployed its Echo Surveyor 8 AUV from the Fugro Equator. Operating close to the seabed, the vehicle acquired high-resolution bathymetric, geophysical and shallow subsurface data. The results will be used to identify seabed and subsurface hazards and inform engineering design and field development planning in the ultra-deepwater area.
Fugro’s Kuala Lumpur Remote Operations Centre provided data quality control and processing support during the campaign. Offshore work began in June 2026 and was completed in August.
For the development team, the survey brings several layers of site information together: seabed topography, near-surface geology and potential hazards that may affect the placement and design of offshore infrastructure. Fugro says the use of an AUV enabled it to acquire detailed data close to the seabed while supporting the project’s assessment and engineering work.
The announcement marks the completion of the survey, rather than a decision on field development. Fugro has not disclosed detailed survey results or specific hazards identified at the two fields.
