TGS and SLB have announced the launch of the Pelotas Sul Phase 1 multi-client 3D seismic survey in the Pelotas Basin offshore southern Brazil. The survey will cover approximately 13,500 km² and represents a significant expansion of modern seismic coverage across one of South America's most closely watched frontier exploration regions.
Data acquisition commenced in December 2025 using the seismic vessel Ramform Tethys, with completion expected in early Q3 2026.
The Pelotas Basin has attracted increasing industry interest due to its geological similarities to productive plays along the conjugate margin offshore Namibia and West Africa. While exploration activity in the basin remains relatively limited, regional studies have identified a variety of potential play types, including deep-water turbidite systems, channel complexes, structural closures and stratigraphic traps.
According to TGS, the Pelotas Sul survey is designed to provide new subsurface insights and support ongoing exploration screening efforts. The project complements the previously announced Pelotas Norte survey and further strengthens regional seismic coverage across the basin.
The survey area contains a combination of held and open acreage, providing exploration companies with opportunities to evaluate both existing positions and potential participation in future licensing rounds.
Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS, said: “Pelotas Sul Phase 1 will provide valuable subsurface insight and help broaden the understanding of a basin that is gaining considerable client attention. We are very pleased to announce Pelotas Sul and support our customers as they evaluate new exploration opportunities in the southern part of the Pelotas Basin.”
The project reflects continuing industry interest in frontier Atlantic margin basins, where improved seismic imaging and regional geological understanding are playing a key role in de-risking exploration opportunities.
