Norwegian marine geophysical company EMGS is preparing for a new phase of operations following a change in ownership, with the company currently rigging the vessel Atlantic for an upcoming controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) survey campaign offshore Norway. The campaign follows the award of new contracts with a combined value of approximately USD 6 million.
The Atlantic, formerly known as Sanco Atlantic, is being mobilised in collaboration with vessel owner Sea Shipping AS. According to EMGS, the project marks an important step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its position as a specialist marine CSEM provider while expanding its international reach.
EMGS reports increasing interest in CSEM technology from international oil and gas operators, particularly as companies revisit frontier exploration opportunities in search of large-scale discoveries and reserve replacement. The company notes that demand for feasibility modelling has increased as operators assess where electromagnetic data can complement existing subsurface datasets prior to committing to acquisition programmes.
Looking beyond the Norwegian campaign, EMGS sees opportunities for CSEM acquisition in frontier and deepwater basins internationally. The company also highlighted the potential for combining CSEM with other marine geophysical methods, including Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic acquisition, to create more integrated offshore survey programmes.
The vessel mobilisation is being carried out at Green Yard and reflects a strategy of repurposing an existing offshore vessel for a broader range of geophysical applications.
