Equinor and Aker BP have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at developing challenging tight reservoirs on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). The joint initiative will focus on technology development, standardisation, and cross-project cooperation to enable the profitable development of complex discoveries and boost overall oil and gas recovery rates.
The Norwegian Offshore Directorate estimates a massive recovery potential of approximately 2.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent locked in mapped tight reservoirs. This potential volume is comparable to the expected recoverable resources of the Johan Sverdrup field. Currently, many of the roughly 90 discoveries still awaiting development approval on the NCS are situated in these tight rock formations, where hydrocarbons flow too slowly for conventional recovery methods to be economically viable.
By viewing their respective portfolios in context, the two operators intend to reduce costs, share knowledge, and accelerate the qualification of new technologies. The collaboration spans various prospects, discoveries, and ongoing projects across the NCS, with a specific focus on resource maturation and advancing solutions for well stimulation.
A joint governance structure and multidisciplinary working groups featuring experts from both companies will drive the work forward immediately. The ultimate ambition of this partnership is to establish a predictable level of activity that builds a highly competitive value chain, ensuring the Norwegian offshore sector has the dedicated supplier capacity and technological expertise required to turn these challenging, tight resources into highly profitable assets.
