Egypt is preparing to launch the first phase of an offshore seismic survey covering approximately 18,000 km² of its Eastern Mediterranean waters. The survey is expected to begin within two weeks and will use ocean-bottom node (OBN) technology to improve imaging of subsea geological structures and support natural gas exploration.
The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) is carrying out the project with SLB and Viridien. The first phase forms part of a wider survey programme that aims to cover up to 95,000 km² of Egyptian waters, building a larger seismic data base to assess undiscovered hydrocarbon resources.
Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said the data should help identify areas with exploration potential, inform decision-making and attract further investment. The vessel Commander is expected to begin operations after arriving in Port Said.
