The Australian Government has declared the West Peron formation in the Bonaparte Basin an identified greenhouse gas storage formation, marking a step forward for INPEX’s proposed Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project.
INPEX proposes to store up to 443 million tonnes of CO₂ in the formation over a period of up to 35 years. Subject to further regulatory approvals, the project is expected initially to receive CO₂ from the Ichthys LNG project, with potential to serve other industrial facilities.
The declaration recognises West Peron as a geological formation beneath the seabed suitable for permanent CO₂ storage. It is an important step in assessing the basin’s potential as a long-term storage hub, but does not represent final approval to develop or operate the project.
