Tape Ark, Moveout Data and Osokey have formed the Stratus Alliance to help energy companies recover, validate and repurpose subsurface data held on obsolete media and in proprietary formats.
The collaboration combines three complementary capabilities. Tape Ark will provide large-scale tape ingestion, legacy-media recovery and cloud migration through its Nexus platform. Moveout Data will contribute geoscience expertise through Metaseis, including the decoding of legacy seismic and navigation formats, metadata reconstruction, technical validation and forensic quality control.
Osokey will provide subsurface data management, trace-level metadata, data discovery and cloud-based access. Its technology already supports major data repositories, including the UK National Data Repository.
Together, the companies aim to provide a coordinated workflow taking subsurface information from physical archives to searchable, governed and AI-ready digital assets. The alliance is intended to reduce the technical risk and vendor coordination involved in large archive-modernisation projects while ensuring that recovered seismic data can be trusted and reused.
Making historical datasets accessible could support seismic reprocessing, basin evaluation, reservoir studies and emerging applications such as carbon storage and geothermal exploration—extracting new subsurface insight without acquiring replacement data.
The alliance will operate across North America, Europe, India and Australia.
