Petrobras has established a major exploration position offshore Côte d’Ivoire after signing production-sharing contracts for eight blocks with the Ivorian government and national oil company PETROCI Holding.
The contracts were signed through Petrobras’ wholly owned subsidiary Petrobras Netherlands B.V. and cover offshore blocks CI-513, CI-600, CI-601, CI-602, CI-603, CI-605, CI-701 and CI-702.
Petrobras will hold a 90% interest and serve as operator of each block, while PETROCI will retain the remaining 10%. The signing ceremony took place in Abidjan and was attended by Petrobras’ Executive Director of Exploration and Production, Sylvia Anjos.
“With this acquisition, Petrobras establishes a significant presence in Côte d’Ivoire, a country located in a region with high exploration potential and geological characteristics similar to those of our sedimentary basins,” said Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard.
“We will apply our experience and technical capabilities to these blocks, and we are confident that we will be able to unlock the possibilities we believe exist along the African Atlantic margin.”
The agreements mark a significant expansion of Petrobras’ international exploration portfolio and reinforce its return to frontier exploration outside Brazil.
According to the company, the acquisition supports its strategy of replenishing oil and gas reserves by exploring new frontiers both domestically and internationally. Petrobras said it is evaluating international opportunities to diversify its exploration portfolio and support the long-term sustainability of its business.
