Viridien has announced that GeoComp, a Sercel business specialising in infrastructure monitoring, has been contracted by Connect Plus Partners JV to deliver geotechnical and structural monitoring for Phase 2 of New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Second Avenue Subway expansion. The contract will run for 40 months.
The project will extend the Q line north into East Harlem and includes excavation of an existing cavern at 116th Street, upgrades to active stations, and construction of new tunnels and underground access points. In such a dense urban environment, monitoring ground movement and structural response during construction is critical for managing risk and supporting safe delivery.
GeoComp will use a combination of automated and manual monitoring systems to track surface and subsurface movement in real time. Data will be delivered through the company’s iSiteCentral platform, giving project teams timely information to support construction decisions, regulatory compliance, and safety management.
The project illustrates the growing importance of near-surface geoscience, geotechnical monitoring, and digital data platforms in major urban infrastructure projects. As cities expand underground transport networks, continuous understanding of ground behaviour and structural response is becoming an essential part of infrastructure resilience.
