Petrobras has identified hydrocarbons in the Morpho exploration well in block FZA-M-59, in the Foz do Amazonas Basin on Brazil’s Equatorial Margin.
Well 1-BRSA-1405-APS is located approximately 175 km offshore Amapá in an ultradeep-water depth of 2,886 metres. The hydrocarbon-bearing interval was identified through electric logs and indications observed in rock samples.
Drilling remains in progress as Petrobras continues its evaluation of the prospect. No estimates of reservoir size, recoverable volumes or commerciality have yet been released.
Petrobras, which holds a 100% interest in FZA-M-59, describes Morpho as the first discovery offshore Amapá. The result provides an initial indication of an active petroleum system in this frontier part of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, but further subsurface analysis and appraisal will be required to determine its significance.
The discovery also gives fresh context to the technical papers presented at the Second EAGE/SBGf Conference on Deepwater Brazil Equatorial Margin in May 2026, which examined the region’s geology, petroleum systems and deepwater exploration potential (exclusive for EAGE members).
