Equinor, operating on behalf of the Northern Lights joint venture, has released the results of the first time-lapse (4D) seismic monitor survey over the Aurora CO2 storage site. Following one year of injection into the Johansen Formation, the 4D difference volumes demonstrate a highly predictable plume migration pattern.
The seismic anomalies align closely with dynamic reservoir simulation models, confirming that the CO2 is migrating up-dip as expected, with absolute containment below the primary Drake Formation caprock seal. The operator highlighted that the deployment of high-resolution repeat Ocean Bottom Nodes (OBN) was crucial for detecting the subtle acoustic impedance changes associated with the relatively thin early-stage CO2 plume.
