Petrobras has successfully identified a second oil-bearing interval at its Morpho exploration well in the deepwater Foz do Amazonas basin, offshore Amapá. Initial fluid analyses confirm the presence of good-quality oil, strongly reinforcing the hydrocarbon potential of Brazil's northern Equatorial Margin. The state-led operator will now conclude drilling operations and proceed with a comprehensive subsurface evaluation of the targeted formations in the FZA-M-59 block, which forms a cornerstone of its frontier exploration strategy to replenish national reserves.
Amid this frontier success, Brazil is taking further steps to expand its offshore development pipeline. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) has announced two permanent-offer rounds scheduled for 7 October in Rio de Janeiro. The expansive offering encompasses a large package of deepwater and pre-salt blocks across the Campos, Santos, Ceará, and Espírito Santo basins.
The public sessions will feature 13 offshore pre-salt blocks in the prolific Campos and Santos basins under production-sharing agreements, alongside numerous concession blocks that include lightly explored deepwater and ultra-deepwater acreage.
Although blocks within the Equatorial Margin are excluded from this specific sale, the broader offering has qualified 49 companies, including Petrobras and major international operators such as Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies. Together, the recent technical success at the Morpho well and the ANP's strategic acreage rollout underscore the continued global investment and long-term production growth potential characterising Brazil's offshore energy sector.
