Roy White described geophysics as the ‘art of the unsolvable’ but the challenge always captivated him as he became the world’s foremost expert on wavelet estimation AVO and spectral analysis.
For nearly 20 years as a research geophysicist at BP in the UK, White advanced statistical methods for seismic analysis, focusing on spectral techniques for seismic wavelet estimation.
He set the bar in 1973 with his paper, ‘The estimation of signal spectra and related quantities by means of the multiple coherence function’, which presented a method for wavelet estimation when there are no available well data. After the paper was published, it won the EAEG's (now the EAGE) Conrad Schlumberger Award for an outstanding contribution to the scientific and technical advancement of geophysics.
White showed that the coherence matching technique enables well log data to estimate the earth reflectivity, albeit with associated noise. The volume of seismic data around the well is scanned for the best statistical fit to the synthetic trace, and a wavelet is estimated at that trace. The filter providing the best match between the earth reflectivity and the seismic is our best estimate of the original seismic wavelet.
He followed up with his 1977 paper ‘The performance of optimum stacking filters in suppressing uncorrelated noise’. This exposed over-elaborate stacking schemes and explains why they fail to fulfil their promise when applied to real seismic data.
In 1980 he published ‘A quantitative approach for the well tie: The Roy White methodology in practice’, demonstrating how well ties could be improved after log editing or seismic conditioning. White wrote: ‘It allows us to analyse error bars on the seismic wavelet spectrum so we can see whether the wavelet is well determined.’
In the same year his paper ‘Partial coherence matching of synthetic seismograms with seismic traces’ described the theory of wavelet estimation when calibrated well data are available. A 1984 paper with Andrew Walden extended the statistical tests for validating such estimated wavelets.
In his 1988 paper, written with Walden and Longbottom, ‘Principles and application of maximum kurtosis phase estimation’, he said: ‘Kurtosis can estimate phase better than other norms that are misleadingly declared to be more efficient by theory based on full-band, noise-free data.’
White’s son, Sam, said: ‘We must admit that Dad’s areas of expertise remain something of a mystery to us. The titles of his research papers are incomprehensible, and we don’t fully understand what he did. But we’ve been assured by his colleagues that he was a clever man—a very clever man indeed!’ They are immensely proud of his achievements as a geophysicist.
Roy White was born one of four children in the UK in April 1938 and brought up in rural Essex during the Second World War. Among his earliest memories was taking refuge under the dining room table during the Blitz, squeezed between his mother and the butcher’s wife.
Having passed the 11-plus and secured a place at Brentwood School, his life in geophysics began when his older brother Geoff gave him a chemistry set for his 14th birthday. From then on maths and science were his favourite subjects at school. Though never a swat – as attested by the time he stuffed a potato into a teacher’s car exhaust – he won a scholarship to study natural sciences at Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1956.
White emigrated to Australia in 1960 after being inspired by a childhood trip with his uncle Bert to watch the Australian cricket team on tour in England. Known as ‘the Invincibles’, it featured Don Bradman who scored 187 that day as one of four scoring a century. Australia amassed 721 runs in just six hours against Essex at Southend on Sea – a record for the most runs scored in a single day of first-class cricket that stands to this day.
White worked first as a demonstrator at the University of Adelaide’s Department of Physics and then as a lecturer in the Department of Physics at the South Australian Institute of Technology. During this period, his interests became distinctly geophysical, obtaining a PhD from the University of Adelaide on the seismicity and crustal structure of South Australia.
But he said the most important event of his time in Adelaide was meeting Marie, a librarian, at the university’s Catholic Society. By his own admission, he wasn’t the suave and sophisticated English gentleman she’d expected, but his wry humour and thoughtful manner soon won her over.
Newly married, he became a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Geophysics at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. His research included seismic studies in the Rocky Mountains, taking his young family with him to camp in wild locations. White would leave the tent in the middle of the night to monitor seismic stations, One time he shared a beer with a curious indigenous man, who retired to bed that night with a working knowledge of geophysics.
After 11 happy years away, White returned to the UK in 1971 to join BP Exploration as a geophysicist at its research centre in the pretty Surrey town of Sunbury-on-Thames, near London. Here he began his career-defining work on the seismic wavelet, started to forge lifelong friendships, also mentoring many young geophysicists. One of them, Tim Summers, recalled: ‘I was part of the team that carried out our first in-house processed 3D survey over the Columba field in the Northern North Sea in the mid-1980s. We had the opportunity to match several wells, extract wavelets, create synthetics etc. with a unique dataset at the time.
I remember Roy working with us on this, evaluating reasons for the range of quality in matches, how to best determine the wavelets and shape the 3D volume. As young geophysicists, we learnt first-hand about the practical application of his research. He also wanted to understand and learn from us how different post-stack and migration processing steps and signal/noise variations impacted the matching and wavelet shaping. We wrote up a technical note together on the work. I remember the importance Roy placed on high quality presentation of the technical work, results and recommendations with clarity and conciseness.’
Keith Nunn, another former colleague at BP, said: ‘Roy remained my mentor and the go-to guy on theoretical seismic processing issues. In terms of wavelet estimation, he was without doubt the world’s foremost expert and he was a highly respected researcher both within and outside BP.’
Matt Luheshi recalled: ‘Roy was my first line manager when I joined BP in 1979. He was a true gentleman, always courteous and very patient. I quickly realised that he had a formidable understanding of the science.
His expertise in spectral analysis and AVO is widely recognised and I was extremely fortunate to be introduced to these topics by a true master. This formed the foundation of my career as a geophysicist, characterised by a sense of understated authority and generosity with his time.’
One of White’s closest friends at BP was Mac Al-Chalabi, with whom he enjoyed epic games of chess and early on squash matches. ‘Roy and I loved our battles over the chess board but, though I had a slight edge in that field, I knew better than to play him at squash.’
A native of Iraq, Al-Chalabi bonded with White over their childhood memories of the Second World War. ‘During tea and coffee breaks Roy and I would natter, compare and learn about each other’s views. We both had patches of memories of World War Two, from infancy and young childhood. Britain had declared war on Iraq in 1941. Roy’s brother, Geoff, was among the British invaders, while my father was a young lieutenant in an Iraqi regiment trying to defend his land. Clearly, neither bore any ill-feeling towards the other and, now, there were the two of us, about as close as any truthful friends could be.’
An honorary member of EAGE, White decided to leave BP and give something back to the profession that he loved so much. In 1989 he was appointed Professor of Geology at Birkbeck College, University of London. After retiring from Birkbeck, he remained engaged in geophysics as a freelance consultant and served as Chief Editor of Geophysical Prospecting from 2004 to 2006. Roy White received EAGE's highest recognition, the Erasmus Award, in 2005 'In recognition of his outstanding achievements that have profoundly influenced both the industry at large and academia'.
Through all his endeavours, nothing was more important to him that his deep Roman Catholic faith. One of his favourite aphorisms was ‘The family that prays together stays together.’ Yet that did not take away his competitiveness at card games, or any game. ‘There was no concession for age,’ said his son Sam. ‘He played to win, and if you won (and that was a big if) you knew you’d earned it.’ White particularly excelled at squash and played the game to a high standard into his fifties.
Another hobby was beekeeping. White admired the way bees worked together and thrived. It wasn’t just about tending hives in the garden but about appreciating the beauty and balance of nature. But when he wasn’t around to keep a paternal eye on his worker bees, they would have a tendency to swarm. ‘Perhaps, like us, the bees knew they could get away with a little rebellion when Dad wasn’t around to keep them in check,’ said Sam.
A lifelong Arsenal supporter, White lived long enough to see his beloved Gunners win the Premier League in May for the first time in more than 20 years, a seismic event that brought him great joy.
Roy White, 1938-2026, is survived by his wife Marie, to whom he was married for nearly 61 years, and their six children: his sons, Sam and Dave, and his daughters, Jo, Bec, Star and Katie.
