There is a moment in every seismic record when the first arrival appears. Before it, uncertainty. After it, responsibility.
The first break does not reveal the reservoir, the seal, the fault, or the value. It tells us only that the Earth has answered. What we do next depends on our science, our discipline, and our willingness to interpret carefully.
That feels like the right place to begin my first column for First Break as President of EAGE. It is also my last. So this is not a manifesto. It is a reflection, a thank you, and a handover.
I remember the first seismic section I ever interpreted as a young geoscientist in 2001. I was certain I saw a structure that was not there. A senior colleague looked over my shoulder, said nothing for a long moment, and then asked a single question: "What else could explain that?" He did not tell me I was wrong. He gave me the discipline of doubt.
That question has stayed with me for 25 years. In many ways, it is what EAGE has always represented to me: a community that asks better questions before it offers confident answers.
Leadership in a professional society is a temporary privilege. One does not own the signal. One carries it for a short distance, strengthens it where possible, removes a little noise, and passes it forward. EAGE was here before us. It will be here after us. Our work is to leave it clearer.
In a world of fast opinions, EAGE still asks for evidence. In a world of fragmented attention, it still gathers people around difficult technical questions and treats them with seriousness. That sounds simple. It is not. Professional societies, at their best, are trust systems. They help a profession remember what quality looks like. They let young people find mentors and allow experts to disagree without weakening the community.
They create the conditions in which knowledge can be tested, shared and put to work. That role is becoming more important, not less.
Energy security has returned to the centre of global discussion. The energy transition is no longer an abstract ambition, but a practical test of systems, capital, infrastructure, technology and public trust. At the same time, digital tools and artificial intelligence are reshaping how we acquire data, interpret uncertainty and make decisions.

For our profession, this is not a small adjustment. It is a widening of purpose. The old question was: what does the subsurface contain? AND, The new question is larger: what decisions can Earth science help society make?
Carbon storage. Geothermal energy. Offshore wind foundations. Critical minerals. Groundwater. Geohazards. Storage integrity. Each of these depends, in different ways, on the subsurface and on those trained to understand it. Change in any mature profession rarely begins at the comfortable centre. It often begins at the edges, where new users meet new tools and begin asking for something the established practice is not yet offering.
For EAGE, those edges are where part of our future is being written by students, young professionals, emerging regions, digital innovators, new energy communities, and those asking uncomfortable but necessary questions about relevance. If we listen well at the edges, we will not merely adapt to the future. We will help shape it.
But shaping the future requires honesty about us. The expert mind is not a neutral interpreter. We see patterns quickly. We prefer familiar explanations. We defend the models that once helped us succeed. We mistake fluency for truth and confidence for correctness. Few professions should understand this better than ours.
A beautiful seismic image can still mislead. A precise model can still be wrong. A familiar interpretation can still outlive the evidence that first supported it. The risk is rarely that we lack data. The deeper risk is that we stop questioning the story we have built around the data.
This is why AI accelerates our workflows but does not relieve us of judgment. A faster instrument in untrained hands does not produce better music. If anything, new tools make judgment more valuable. The question is no longer whether a model is fast. It is whether it preserves uncertainty, sharpens interpretation, helps us see what we had previously missed, or merely accelerates weak assumptions wrapped in confident output.
Good science needs the right kind of friction. Not bureaucracy. Not delay for its own sake. The useful friction of peer review, technical challenge, field evidence, open disagreement, and the courage to ask: what might we be missing?
The purpose of professional knowledge is not only to be published. It is to be tested, shared and put to work. EAGE exists, in part, to close that gap: to turn papers into practice, individual insight into shared standard, and technical excellence into decisions that matter.
What has impressed me most as President is not only the scale of the association, but the quiet commitment behind it. Reviewers strengthening papers. Instructors mentoring the next generation. Local chapters building community across regions. Students who present their first ideas with courage. Volunteers shaping technical programmes through work most members will never see. This invisible labour is what keeps a profession alive: the slow, patient sedimentation of small contributions that, over time, becomes the ground others stand on.
EAGE Annual 2026 in Aberdeen, with its focus on value through technology and partnership, arrives at a symbolic moment. Aberdeen holds the memory of one energy era and the ambition of another. It reminds us that transitions do not happen by erasing the past. They happen by transforming capability.
The physics that helped us image reservoirs now helps us monitor carbon storage. The understanding of pressure, fluids, faults and seals supports geothermal development and storage integrity. Offshore experience can support new energy infrastructure. Digital workflows can improve the speed, transparency and quality of subsurface decisions.
This is not the end of geoscience. It is the expansion of its relevance. To the students and young professionals opening First Break for the first time: do not inherit geoscience as a narrow profession. Treat it as a discipline with public consequence.
The world urgently needs people who can think across time, scale and uncertainty. People who are deeply grounded and widely connected. People who can work with new tools without losing first principles. People who can speak to scientists, engineers, policymakers and communities without losing the integrity of the science.
That is a demanding standard, and it is also an inspiring one. To the members, volunteers, reviewers, instructors, staff and partners who carry this association forward: thank you. You are its real custodians. A presidency is temporary; a community endures.
The first break is only the beginning. The full image comes later, through patience, discipline and care. For generations, EAGE has helped us learn to see beneath the surface. Now we must help society decide what to do with what we see. We learned to see. Now we must learn to decide.
So here is the work, and here is the way: ask the hard question, then ask it each day. The Earth keeps its secrets, but answers the bold, to those who keep listening, the story's retold.
