First Break June 2008 2008-06-03
Besides the usual EAGE News and the latest industry news, this month's First Break is about Leveraging Technology. First Break June 2008 starts off with two technical articles. Structural models: optimizing risk analysis by understanding conceptual uncertainty and Effects of pre-processing on reverse time migration: a North Sea study. In a special topic about Leveraging Technology author Manfred Joswig provides information about the concept of nanoseismic monitoring. One of the other Special Topics is Salt mapping in the Gulf of Mexico using marine magnetotellurics. First Break June ends with two Technology features. One of the articles is Sequence stratigraphy-keyed geological modelling in a giant Abu Dhabi oil field. Several authors illustrate how core and well-log data were used to establish a sequence stratigraphic framework and a lithofacies scheme as input into a geological model to provide better prediction of the vertical and lateral distribution of reservoir quality and continuity in a major Abu Dhabi oil field. The cover shows: Inside the Pantheon (Temple of the Gods). The oldest dome structure in Rome built in the time of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 A.D.) will be a ...

EAGE Amsterdam 2009: Quo Vadis ? 2008-05-28
From the classical antiquities of Rome, EAGE’s major annual event is moving next to Amsterdam. This is a foretaste of what we can expect. While the exhibitor stands are just being erected in Rome, the solid foundations of the next Annual Conference and Exhibition are already being laid for 8-11 June in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Even though we are just over 12 months away from the opening, it is clear that 2009 will be an ‘interesting’ year for the global economy, with conflicting indicators coming from all directions: historically high oil prices in the face of a US recession while potentially the world’s third largest oilfield has been discovered offshore Brazil. But the ebb and flow of economic uncertainty will not rock the Amsterdam conference, as EAGE returns to the capital of the country which hosted the first meeting in 1951 and which continues to be a favourite destination for exhibitors and delegates alike. The theme of the meeting has been judiciously selected by the Amsterdam Local Advisory ...

Dubai workshop will lay out the tar mat issues 2008-04-28
An emerging topic in the Middle East and elsewhere is the technical and economical feasibility of converting tar mats (non-movable hydrocarbon saturation) into new reserves. This oilfield management issue has prompted the organization of the EAGE/SPE Technical Workshop on Tar Mats to be held on 9-12 November in Dubai (UAE).

Tar mats are encountered throughout the world and are quite common in carbonate reservoirs in the Middle East, including several of the 10 largest reservoirs in the world. Tar mats are usually – but not always – located at or near present-day oil/water contacts. The tar saturation is commonly unpredictable, at least at the level of detail needed to effectively place injection wells to minimize loss of mobile oil above the tar and to minimize the risk of sidetracking wells to get back above the tar. According to the workshop organizers, one key concern is how tar mats impact reservoir connectivity and their effect on water flooding. The workshop is likely to raise a host of questions. For ...

Workshop starts new chapter for Polish students 2008-04-28
It all started with a simple thought at the beginning of December 2007 - ‘We meet foreign geophysicists from all over the world, but never have the occasion to get together with our fellow Polish geophysics students’.

In no time at all, a special committee of 18 students headed by Paulina Krakowska and Malgorzata Mider was busy organizing a four-day workshop and in the process of forming an EAGE Student Chapter in Poland.

In the ensuing five months, the EAGE I Student Geophysical Workshop on Geo-Sphere took shape. The preparatory work was rewarded when nearly 80 participants from the University of Silesia in Sosnowiec, University of Gdansk, and University of Science and Technology AGH in Krakow attended the actual event, which took place on 17-20 April in Krakow and nearby Miekinia. The Geo-Sphere event was divided between days devoted to lectures and presentations and others to field training and field trips The main aims of the workshop were to establish contact between Polish geophysics ...
