First Break July 2009 2009-06-29
Besides the usual EAGE News and latest industry news, First Break July has two Special Topics on Well Technologies and Mining Geoscience. First Break July 2009 starts off with two Technical Articles: Uses and abuses of microtremor spectra and Tutorial: Time conversion of depth migrated data. An important focus of modern reservoir technology is the contribution of seismic monitoring. Maver et al. show that it is time to put microseismic methods on the list of options. According to their experience, the technology can be a valuable tool installed in live wells to evidence the stress changes around a well associated with production drilling, the data providing clues to likely fluid movement and other significant information for reservoir management. Integration is also the theme of Thevoux-Chabuel’s contribution which discusses how reservoir operations could be improved with faster updates of the geological model to include real-time drilling data. The steps required to achieve this are laid out. An interesting concept adopted by his company Roxar is an alarm methodology to guide the geologist. Moore et al. provide a valuable exposition of the noise issues in logging-while-drilling ...

Focus on the bigger picture at Amsterdam 2009-06-29
Looking back on last month’s annual meeting in Amsterdam, the old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words comes to mind. Our photos are the evidence that this was a highly successful and busy event for the nearly 5000 who attended. The mood at EAGE Amsterdam 2009 was surprisingly upbeat with the talk among participants focusing on the timing of recovery for oil and gas related business rather than dwelling on the clouds of recession that have affected the geoscience and engineering services sector. It of course helped that the event itself met if not exceeded expectations in terms of a spacious but animated exhibition, a top quality technical programme with SPE Europec once again a positive factor, and a convivial conference evening at the Amsterdam Convention Factory well up to EAGE’s exacting standards for memorable entertainment. Student participants this year for the first time had their own evening occasion at the Strand Zuid city beach, by all accounts enjoyed by all, ...

Looking forward to Near Surface 2009 in Dublin 2009-06-29
In this appetizer for the Near Surface 2009 meeting in Dublin in September, John Arthur, vice chairman, Near Surface Division, describes how an excellent technical programme was planned. In May this year, representatives of the Dublin Local Advisory Committee and the Near Surface Geoscience Division Committee met at EAGE HQ in Houten to finalize the technical programme for Near Surface 2009 in September. By the time the team arrived the 155 papers offered for selection had been refereed by the appropriate technical specialists and graded for acceptability. The piles for each projected topic had been laid out neatly by the Houten staff and the team began with the sessions commanding the largest response.Timings for the two parallel oral sessions and a parallel poster session had already been agreed and, one by one, each block of four oral papers and eight poster papers for each 80 minute period was agreed. Authors had been asked to indicate their preference for mode of presentation and this was ...

Petrophysics software addition for Schlumberger 2009-06-29
Schlumberger has acquired the shares of Techsia, French supplier of petrophysical software including its flagship Techlog product. The company, based in Montpellier, will become the Schlumberger Petrophysics Software Centre of Excellence providing solutions for the oil and gas exploration and production industry but will continue to operate under its own name.Techsia future product development will benefit from collaboration with a number of Schlumberger research and development centres that offer knowledge and expertise in geomechanics, well placement, production logging, and fluid characterization. In addition, the introduction of the Techsia Malcom solution for the chromatographic analysis of fluid samples will be enhanced by the global reach of Schlumberger.Tony Bowman, president of Schlumberger Information Solutions, said: ‘Techlog will form a powerful complement to the industry-leading Petrel earth model through an integrated approach to log and core petrophysical interpretation. ...
