First Break May 2008 2008-04-28
Besides the usual EAGE News and the latest industry news, this month's First Break is about 4D Seismic First Break May 2008 starts off with two technical articles Building velocity models for depth imaging in the presence of short-wavelength velocity variations: a North Sea case study and Passive seismic surface deformation monitoring of steam injection. In a special topic about 4D Seismic author Keith Watt provides information about a new QC approach for 4D seismic surveys using towed streamer acquisition. One of the other Special Topics is Identifying and removing effects of multiples on time-lapse interpretation at Valhall First Break May ends with two Technology features. One of the articles is Deep water processing: East Coast India In this feature several authors discuss the challenge involved in processing seismic data in a complex environment focusing on the importance of pre-processing along with a briefer review of the velocity modelling and depth imaging strategy involved. The cover shows: Comparing the data (Our Special Topic on 4D seismic and its growing use as a reservoir ...

Benvenuti a Roma! 2008-04-28
It is only a month before EAGE gathers for its Rome 2008 - 70th Conference and Exhibition under the patronage of Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development. The event is being staged in the classical city of Rome at the magnificent newly built Nuova Fiera di Roma exhibition centre, located between the city and Fiumicino Airport. There is much to look forward to and every reason to be there. The official opening of EAGE Rome 2008 will see a star-studded line-up of key figures in the E&P business worldwide addressing the chosen theme of the event ‘Leveraging Technology’. Due to speak are such luminaries as Stefano Cao, chief operating officer, Eni E&P; David Lawrence, executive vice-president exploration, Shell (and chairman of the Local Advisory Committee for EAGE Amsterdam 2009); Johnny Hall, executive vice-president exploration, ExxonMobil; Robert Brunck, chairman and CEO, CGGVeritas; and Andrew Maskrey of the UN Development Programme. The first full day will also see two Executive Sessions flesh out the Conference theme, one on the state of oil and gas industry R&D, and the other on ...

Stratigraphy Terminoloy and Practice 2008-04-28
This book, written by 33 stratigraphic experts, presents various processes available which will enable the location in time of all rock types: sedimentary, metamorphic, plutonic, and eruptive, whether they are in outcrop or at subsurface.

The terminology and the appropriate practices for each method are presented in separate chapters and illustrated with concrete examples.

Prof Mallet heads third EAGE Education Tour 2008-04-28
Distinguished French geoscientist Prof Jean-Laurent Mallet, emeritus professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie, has agreed to support the third EAGE Education Tour with his one day course on ‘Numerical Earth Models’. Locations for the tour will be scheduled from September 2008 onwards and can be found on our website.

The philosophy behind Prof Mallet’s presentation is that for oil and gas exploration and production, there are only two fundamental questions: how much can we expect to earn and how much could we lose? He argues that the correct answers to these questions are crucial. At risk are the tens of millions of dollars to acquire data on a lease, before spending hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the oil field. Decisions therefore have to be taken on the basis of a numerical model of the subsurface, integrating all the data and knowledge that have been collected and interpreted by a series of geoscientists, from the geophysical interpretation to the flow simulator. The course ...

Student recruitment a priority at German Geophysical Society meeting 2008-04-28
EAGE was represented at the 68th Annual Meeting of the German Geophysical Society, Germany’s biggest event on geophysical research, hosted in March by the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg.

It was a fruitful meeting with plenty of interest in the Association’s activities displayed at a centrally located booth. The number of students visiting and signing up for membership was especially encouraging. In fact students were a major preoccupation during the meeting, so much so that the German Geophysical Society hosted a press conference to discuss the question - ‘Is the supply of natural resources endangered by the shortage of young scientists?’ In the exhibition hall a job centre was set up to serve as a contact point for all geo-oriented students and potential employers. With geophysics students especially in demand both in Europe and further afield, ExxonMobil, RWE Dea, Baker Hughes INTEQ, Fugro Robertson, and StatoilHydro all took the opportunity to meet young ...

Special topic:
Straightening out lateral shifts in time-lapse seismic
:
In time-lapse seismic studies involving compacting reservoirs, vertical time-lapse time-shifts are frequently observed and prove useful for mapping out the areal distribution of reservoir compaction (Hatchell and Bourne, 2005).
